Play dough and faces

I love the blank face template from twinkle!
In our room, we laminated them and are using them as play dough mats to create different faces as we learn to label emotions.
This child made a worried face :)

Play dough and numbers

Children ages 2-3 can try to roll out playdough to the shape of numbers on a mat.
You can pretend to make a wiggly worm that likes to curl into numbers :)

Learning with dinosuars

Children love dinosaurs! They really make a great classroom theme for  2-3 year olds.
Here are a few ideas that I tried and my kids enjoyed.
1)Dino world off course:
Here we also focused on construction so we added in wooden blocks and logs to let the children build towers and bridges for their dinosaurs.
If you're looking for a short term, easy-to-clean-up set up then this is perfect! We used empty boxes, moss balls, tissue paper, wooden logs and ...voila!
The children learn about what dinosaurs eat and how they live. I heard all sorts of suggestions, like dinos should eat cars and planes :). Also some said trees and lives. We also created dino eggs and talked about how baby dinosaurs hatch from eggs.

2) Literacy with dino bones: In this activity, we painted hard paper white and cut them into bones. Besides trying to build up a dino skeleton. We thought we would build shape and letter skeletons. Look, someone made an 'A; skeleton!

3) Problem solving; How will Mummy get to baby dinosaur?
Two dinosaurs separated by a river (you could put a blue cloth to be the river) and two boards. The children need to think about how to get across... In this case, make a bridge.
4) We printed labeled dinosaur pictures and tried to match the plastic ones to the pictures.

What are your fun dino ideas?

Magical me display board

"Magical me" is such a fun theme to start the school year!
For 2 year olds, it's always fun to do hand prints, and try to build a face with all sorts of resources :D
Here are a few ideas for your display board.
Enjoy!

So, it's hand prints with glitter, paper plate faces with googly eyes and yarn for hair and face templates for the children to colour in.

Mark making and books

It's never too early to teach your little one to be interested in picture books and making marks.
These are all important parts of pre-literacy.
If you're always writing , then I'm sure your little one has tried to take your pen more than once.
Why not create their own writing area on the floor with paper, colored pencils, coloured markers and a white board!
Let them do as they please!
Always supervise. ..cos everything goes in the mouth! :D
Have magazines and booklets around that you don't mind them ripping pages off (what to do!) And watch them turn the pages with those little fingers...what a perfect way for fine motor skills.
Talk about the pictures with them as this helps develop language.

What's in mummy's bag?

They say to never open a lady's purse.
But sometimes, it's a great exercise for your little one.
First,  make sure you take out things that could hurt your LO when they put in the mouth. Leave in soft things like a scarf, an empty and cleaned pot of hand cream, lip gloss,  wallet, etc.
Then let your little one try to manipulate the zipper and if they are successful, they'll be rewarded with stuff to explore in mummy's hand bag! This is called heuristic play; where children explore a variety of thongs, especially natural resources and try to make sense of them.
It's easy to clean up afterwards :D.

As a working mum, I don't always do messy play. But I always make an exception with noodles :D
It's so delightful for the toddler to try to feed himself and then mash it up when he's done. Yes, it's a mess... but sensory play is always a plus! He gains confidence as he can control his own play and decide what to do. He also experiences various textures and sensations with those tiny fingers.

Learning about the world

I love to explore with my little one.
It is important to help babies make sense of the world around them and to raise curiosity about things and people around them.
They also love to learn about themselves, which is why they love mirrors.
Water play doesn't just keep it cool in summer, it also allows a lot of expression for toddlers. It's so much fun splashing it water and it brings out so much emotional development.
and show the marks their wet footprints make on the floor...

Learning about the world also involves showing them things in nature,

 introducing them to sounds,
The list is endless :D
We do it everyday of course! The key is not rushing through it but taking a moment to allow your LO take in new things and you point out the names and sounds of things he's interested in

First day of school: Settling in

As an early years practitioner, I've survived a couple years settling in screaming preschoolers. I've seen it all! The quiet- resis...
